Ford Protect® Extended Service Plan – Coverage, Terms, & Benefits

Ford Protect Overview - Joe Rizza Ford

Most people hold onto their vehicles for years after the warranty has expired. This makes sense, since a properly cared-for vehicle will still be in great working order at the end of the warranty period, and in many cases, the owner may still be making payments on the vehicle. But this period of ownership after the factory warranty expires means that the vehicle isn’t covered in the event that something happens requiring a repair. This is where Ford Protect comes in, the Extended Service Plan extends coverage for up to 10 years or 175,000 miles. Joe Rizza Ford has put together the following guide to help explain the different aspects of this highly useful plan.

What Is The Ford Protect Extended Service Plan?

Ford Service

The Ford Protect Extended Service Plan offers additional coverage beyond the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. But this isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of a situation, and Ford actually offers four different plans, allowing you to pick the one that’s right for your budget. This includes PowertrainCARE, BaseCARE, ExtraCARE, and PremiumCARE. These each offer different levels of coverage, with PowertrainCARE covering critical engine and transmission components, and PremiumCARE covering a wide range of more than a thousand different components. Coverage for electric vehicles is also offered, and the plans are essentially the same, with the major difference being that there is no PowertrainCARE standalone plan. Here is a simplified breakdown of the major systems covered by each plan:

Ford Protect Premium Maintenance Plan

Ford Service Diagnostics

The best way to keep your vehicle running like new is to have it regularly serviced and inspected by technicians who are Ford experts. Fortunately, Ford has an additional plan for that. Known as the Premium Maintenance Plan, it covers inspections, preventive care, and replacement of normal wear and tear items. That includes the following:

  • Engine oil and filter changes
  • Multi-point inspections
  • Tire rotations
  • Brake pads and linings
  • Shock absorbers/struts
  • Spark plugs
  • Clutch discs
  • Engine belt
  • Engine coolant hoses, clamps and o-ring seals
  • Wiper blades
  • Diesel exhaust fluid fill at the time scheduled maintenance is performed at dealership

Pricing and the specifics of what the plan entails depend on the vehicle, but Ford has two brochures that explain in greater detail, one for gas, diesel, and hybrid vehicles, and one for electric vehicles. You can download them here:
